Marx toys: quick answers

Who was Louis Marx?
Louis Marx founded Louis Marx and Company in New York in 1919. By the mid-20th century it was one of the largest toy makers in the world, known for affordable tin lithographed wind-up toys, trains, cars and playsets.
How do I identify a Marx toy?
Look for the Marx logo, a large X inside a circle with the word MARX, stamped or printed on the tin. Many toys also carry the words Louis Marx & Co., New York, or a country of manufacture.
What are old Marx toys worth?
Value depends on rarity, condition, working order and the original box. Bright, unscratched lithography and a working wind-up mechanism make a big difference. Character toys and complete playsets in their boxes are the most sought after.
When did Marx stop making toys?
The company was sold to Quaker Oats in 1972, and the Marx name faded from American toy shelves by the end of the 1970s.
